Term life insurance

Term life insurance covers a set period, commonly 10, 15, 20 or 30 years, for a level premium. If the insured dies during the term, the beneficiaries receive the death benefit; when the term ends, coverage stops unless it is renewed or converted. Term has no cash value, which keeps premiums lower than permanent coverage, and many term policies can be converted to permanent coverage within a set window.

  • Who buys it: families protecting a mortgage, replacing income or paying off debt, and business owners covering key people or buy-sell agreements.
  • How our agents sell it: mortgage protection leads, referrals, and younger clients and family members of final expense clients.

Indexed universal life (IUL) and universal life (UL)

Universal life (UL) is permanent life insurance with flexible premiums and an adjustable death benefit, and its cash value grows at an interest rate the carrier declares. Guaranteed universal life (GUL) focuses on a guaranteed death benefit with little cash value. Indexed universal life (IUL) credits cash value based on the performance of a market index, such as the S&P 500, subject to a cap and a participation rate, with a floor that keeps credited interest from going below a set minimum (often 0%) in down years. IUL cash value is not invested directly in the market.

  • Who buys it: clients who want lifelong protection with flexible premiums, cash value accumulation, or both.
  • How our agents sell it: needs-based conversations about protection, cash value and retirement goals, with illustrations from the carrier.

Whole life insurance

Whole life insurance is permanent coverage with level premiums, a guaranteed death benefit and guaranteed cash value growth. Participating whole life policies may also pay dividends, which are not guaranteed. Final expense, simplified issue whole life (SIWL) and guaranteed issue whole life (GIWL) are smaller whole life policies built for end-of-life costs; see our Final Expense page and SIWL and GIWL.

  • Who buys it: clients who want coverage that never expires, predictable premiums and guaranteed cash value, including final expense and legacy planning.
  • How our agents sell it: as the permanent option next to term, and as final expense for seniors.
